Musician plays in unique festival
In May 2006, musician Jules Polacheck performed at the biennial Festival of International Renaissance and American Baroque Music, held in the seven Jesuit mission churches in eastern Bolivia. A professional cellist for 33 years, Jules joined musicians from Europe and the Americas.
Jesuit missionaries founded the missions among the Chiquitos peoples and taught them Christianity, arts, crafts, and music. After the Jesuits were expelled from the New World in 1767, the Chiquitos carried on much of what they learned, but their art and music knowledge was nearly lost.
In 1988, during the restoration of the Jesuit-built churches in the mission towns, archives of Baroque-style music were discovered. This discovery launched the music festival in 1996, which is gaining international attention.
Through a contact of LATCOM’s, Jules was invited to participate in the 2006 festival.
